Vanuatu – Advanced Adventure – August 2013

You’ve just learned to dive! Now what?

December 11, 2012 |  by  |  Dive Club, Sydney Diving, Training, Travel  |  No Comments  |  Share

So… you have just completed your open water course. You can tick the “Learn to dive” box and move on to something else, right? Well, you could, but you could also use the skill you have just learned and explore the amazing underwater world.

Weedy seadragon.Diving in Sydney might seem uninteresting, especially when compared to tropical diving but there is amazing number of animals to see around Sydney. Many of the animals we see you won’t ever see in the tropics, such as weedy seadragons, Port Jackson sharks at pineapplefish. Some other animals are much more abundant and accessible in Sydney, such as cuttlefish, octopus and seahorses.

Shipwrecks Video

August 29, 2012 |  by  |  Featured, Training  |  No Comments  |  Share

As I’m cleaning my gear I get a lot of questions from guys around the shop about “where I’ve been diving” and “what’s down there at that depth”. Here’s a little film I put together that gives you some insight into the deeper wrecks around NSW. Many of the wrecks shown in the video are inside the 50m mark, meaning that with the right training and experience they can even be dived on a single and pony. Of course, a set of twins, and/or rebreather give you a lot more time at depth. Ask Kel or myself if you’re interested in deeper training, like TDI deep or wreck.

Hideaway Photo Workshop 2012

Hideaway Photo Workshop 2012

Our end of year trip just keeps getting better. I’m happy to announce that the underwater photography will be run by Damien Siviero, who many of you will know from around the shop. Damien is an award winning photographer, who has published images in magazines, marketing campaigns and all manner of stuff online. He’s typically found diving on a rebreather, shooting sharks or off on a cave/wreck expedition, but we have him on this trip! If you want to learn how to take photos underwater, here’s an opportunity to learn from one of the best.

I asked Damien the other day what the workshop would cover, here’s what he said:

“I think we can all fall victim to wanting/needing the newest camera model, more megapixels, higher ISO, etc… whilst that’s important, I want to take things back to basics and focus on light. It might sound simple, but that is what photography is all about. Subject, framing, shutter aperture  – these are the key to a great image. Read More

Nitrox, voodoo gas or common sense?

Nitrox, voodoo gas or common sense?

April 13, 2011 |  by  |  Equipment, Featured, Training  |  , , ,  |  No Comments  |  Share

In the early 1990’s, nitrox or “voodoo gas” as it was often referred to was the exclusive domain of the expedition or technical diver. Today, with education and aware nitrox has become a common, safe and affordable gas that is considered standard in many parts of the world. Contrary to popular misconception, nitrox doesn’t allow you to go deeper but instead limits your maximum depth limit. What it does do exceptionally well is extend no decompression limits (NDL), meaning you can stay down longer. Read More
